"School Chaplaincy is a pastoral role carried out in an educational setting in a collaborative and cooperative maner in order to promote the spiritual and human development of the members of the Catholic school community."
– Ontario Bishops, Pastoral Letter on Catholic Secondary School Chaplaincy, OCCB, March 2009
It is understood to be an essential ministry to the whole Catholic school community, students and staff. This ministry is collaborative and encourages the gifts of others; it is pastoral and spiritual, involving litugy and prayer, teaching, counselling and witness.
Our school Chaplain, Rev. Mr. Trevor Klein (Deacon), has undergone theological education and formation to share in the Church's ministry to its members and guided by the Church's teaching and practical advice; fostering a support network for home, school and parish.
Additionally, the Chaplain is a staff advisor for the Catholicity Committee and attends meetings at the Deanery, as well as, regular meetings with other Chaplains from the WCDSB. These commitments outside our school work toward maintaning a collegial and collaborative approach to high school ministry and ensure that our student voices have representation in our faith community.
Liturgical Coordination
The Chaplaincy Leader coordinates school masses and prayer services. Loretto Chapel is frequented by our school community for prayer, meditation and reflection, or the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The Blessed Sacrament is reserved within the chapel throughout the school year.
Spiritual Development
The Chaplaincy Leader participates in classroom visits; offers retreats for staff and students; and coordinates special events and speakers throughout the year. These opportunities enhance our spiritual lives at Bishop Macdonell and help guide inclusive and safe discussions on meaningful and current issues affecting our students and community.
Community Outreach
The Chaplaincy Leader coordinates student involvement in charitable activities that support both our community and abroad. For more details, speak to Deacon Klein or visit Chaplain Programming
