Wellington Catholic DSB Breaks Ground on New Bishop Macdonell CHS Track and Turf Field Alongside Site of South End Community Centre

The Wellington Catholic District School Board has broken ground on their new track and turf field installation at Bishop Macdonell Catholic High School alongside the site of the City of Guelph’s highly-anticipated South End Community Centre.

The redevelopment of the sports fields at Bishops Macdonell CHS will see a brand new six-lane polyurethane rubberized running track, full size artificial turf field to accommodate various sports including football, soccer, rugby, lacrosse and field hockey and a spectator berm.

“We are thrilled to see the start of construction on our new track and turf field installation. The new field will extend the playing season, will be easier to maintain and will be of benefit to our students, student-athletes, and community,” shared Tracy McLennan, Associate Director – Corporate Services for the Wellington Catholic DSB. “Providing recreation facilities for our students and their families to continue to learn and grow in the south end contributes to a whole community approach to education. We are grateful to see this new development and know it will be a positive addition for our community.”

By 2026 families at Bishop Macdonell CHS and community members in the south end of the Guelph, will be able to enjoy state of the art recreational facilities. The brand-new track and turf field at Bishop Macdonell CHS is set to see a completion date of June 2024, while the South End Community Centre’s revised schedule anticipate the opening in 2026.

“This is incredibly exciting. As we break ground on the future site of the South End Community Centre, we’re not just building a community centre, we’re building community, a place where people can meet, connect, and be active,” says Scott Stewart, chief administrative officer for the City of Guelph, in a statement released by the city earlier this week.
