The goal of BMAC Democracy Week is to raise awareness about the importance of voting and to promote student voter registration. See the Ontario Register of Future Voters for more details. (Elections Ontario is a a non-partisan office of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario responsible for administering provincial elections in Ontario, led by the Chief Electoral Office)
WHY? The right to vote has not always existed for everyone in Canada. Voting was once seen as a privilege: certain groups were excluded at different times. Now almost all Canadian citizens over 18 have the right to vote. There are still barriers to voting and changes need to happen to make Canada's democracy more inclusive. Voting should be easy and accessible for all eligible voters!!
More details and information about how to register to be a future voter will be shared with students over announcements and through email. Our school is entering a provincial competition to see how many 16 and 17 year-olds we can encourage to register!!
