Saint Valentin pour les Vétérans

Veterans from across Canada will be receiving a special recognition of thanks for their service this Valentine’s Day.

Grade 9 students in Bishop Macdonell Catholic High School’s spent some time in their French class last week creating valentine cards for Canadian veterans through an annual program operated by Veterans Affairs Canada.

“I was made aware of the opportunity through a friend of mine who is a teacher in another school board. This is an annual event that Veteran's Affairs Canada organizes every year to show support to Veterans who are living in long-term care homes all over Canada,” shared Joanna Valeriote, teacher at Bishop Macdonell. “This is the first year that I have done this with my class, but it is a tradition I hope to continue!”

Valeriote mailed around 30 valentines with messages in French before the February 1 deadline. The valentines are mailed to Veterans Affairs Canada who then distributes them across the country in time for Valentine's Day.

Choosing to create the cards with messages in French was especially important, as there is a value for students to see French language used in authentic contexts.

“Through this activity, we were able to use our French language skills to communicate a kind message to people who have supported our country through military service. Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is centered in my course. Through listening, speaking, reading, and writing provocations, students learn about identification and management of emotions, stress management and coping strategies, as well as healthy relationship skills. This activity allowed students to consider the experience of a Veteran and demonstrate empathy. We discussed the significance of the sacrifice that Veterans have made and how small gestures of gratitude can make a difference. Creating and sending these valentines allows the students to engage in authentic written communication in French,” shared Valeriote. “The students appreciated the opportunity to be creative and show support and kindness for others.”
